Hidden away in trees near a busy main road is this 18th century house. Built originally as a manse ( vicarage) it was the birthplace of the philosopher and poet Dr Thomas Brown. In the 20th century it was converted to offices for the company that owned a nearby granite quarry, sadly many of the original features were lost at that time. The final "resident" was the sculptor Hideo Furuta who was allowed to live for a time by the quarry owners in the by now run down house.
The building is in a poor condition and I didn't risk going upstairs after finding a large hle under the lino on the first landing.
Thanks for looking. Rest on flckr.

I like the ceiling rose & & the laths falling out of the ceiling in the other room. Is that a twin tub washer outside? I haven't seen one of those for about 30 years!

From the look of the ceiling I'd guess the roof leaks and you were wise not to explore upstairs, Liked the photos and report, Thanks

An old Banda machine! (A name which, if uttered disrespectfully that could get you a serious kicking in Malawi until not too long ago!)

This is hauntingly similar to Virginia Woolf's Asham House, also near a quarry, which became derelict in the 1930s and was demolished in 1994 despite of having been listed. For a moment I thought it was the one.. great pictures!
