Lonsdale House was a boarding house for the boys dormitory at Rutland County College after the college was extended in the mid-80's. Before this it was use as an educational building with student quarters on the top floor. In September 2012 the college was re-located to nearby barnsdale, on the site of the closed Barnsdale Hall Care Home. I'm struggling to find an exact date to when Lonsdale closed but most reports are saying 2011. Unfortunately the building suffered 2 arson attacks in April and June 2012. Latest reports point to a supermarket chain buying the site and applying for planning permission for a medium sized store.

I'm going through my visits from the start, as a result all my reports so far are 2/3 years ago. Some have been demolished.

Lovely clean photos, looks like it would have been a lovely place.

I remember Lonsdale House well. In the seventies is was an old people’s home, my granny lived there. It was a beautiful house. It then was taken over by the education dept. and used as a boarding house for some of the girls who attended Rutland High School for Girls, their school being in what was the grounds to the house.
I have returned to Oakham for a look around and am shocked at the number of these beautiful places that have been demolished, it isn’t just the buildings it’s their history. What have you done Rutland, even the school is now Aldi, or is Lidl. Not so sorry about that one!
