Big thanks to Brewtal for letting me know about this place. Its a real time capsule.

History

Brewtal already did an excellent history of this place, so I'll summarise.

  • Owned by Sidney Hilton who died in 1996
  • Sidney owned a coach building business in partnership with his brother
  • Sidney was fairly wealthy judging from the mass of unpaid cheques scattered around.

The Explore

I set off nice and early on a Sunday morning, hoping not to bump into any local residents on my way in. There wasn't a soul around at this time of the morning, so no problems here. Apart from a having to wade through some brambles, it is fairly simple to get to.

So where do we begin with this house. The moment you step through the door its clear that this property has been truly forgotten and uncared for. Its been 21 years since Sidney died and it shows. The ceiling is slowly collapsing with roof tiles and insulation all over the floor.

Its fair to say however that it hasn't seen as much vandalism as I've come to expect to see, which is a refreshing relief.

It is quite sad feeling wondering round the house, its especially sad to see Sidney's ashes still sat on a shelf forgotten by his family.

This house wins the award for the most disgusting decorative feature I have encountered so far, a browny yellow shagpile toilet seat....someone thought that was a good idea apparently.

Externals

Externally its nothing amazing, its a 2 bedroom bungalow with a separate garage.

Good to know the NHS problems are nothing new.

The Masters place is a truly wonderful dive into the past, but a the overshadowing feeling of sadness is hard to escape.

A nice collection of photographs. I remember the Green Shield stamps, every time the car was filled with fuel you got Green Shield stamps and collected them in a album, when the album was full it got exchanged for items around the house.

Yes, and like all good things (VHS and Beta Max as another example), wasn't there a smaller less successful equivalent scheme too?

I remember coming across a derelict site that had boxes and boxes of unused green shield stamps, must have been hundreds of thousands. Sadly long after the scheme folded though so I couldn't deck out my house in free cheaply made tat.

Also £195,000 was a vast sum of money in 1973, more than 2 million in today's money.

You've done a damn fine job of that mate, I knew you would. I guess I missed the ashes then. But then, the only time I have ever seen an urn was my late Grandad's. Plus it was very early and I'd had a late one the night before as well. Did you move the false teeth in the bathroom? Lovely shots as always, really enjoyed your take on this sad but special place.

Great shots. I remember when those toilet seats were all the rage (just not necessarily in that er... colour). I'll try to get a visit to this spot in soon, not too far away being a Surrey lad myself :)

Thank you! Nope didn't touch the false teeth, didn't want to touch them!

I did almost think I got rumbled as I was leaving, I came out the brambly hill onto the road as a residents car was driving down. They pulled over almost immediately and appeared like they were about to get out there car, and then they stopped and pulled out their phone. I was expected to get a good quizzing as to what I was doing in the bushes haha.
