The Keir estate was acquired by the Stirling family in 1448, and a house was built on it in the 16th century. The Stirlings supported the Jacobites during the 18th-century rebellions, and the estate was forfeited. However, they continued to live at Keir, and built the present house in around 1760. Income from the family's estates in Jamaica funded agricultural improvements and landscaping of the grounds
Additions were made to the house, including the south-west wing to designs by David Hamilton, completed in 1831. In 1847 Sir William Stirling Maxwell inherited the estate, and began a remodelling of the house and grounds. Architects Alfred Jenoure and William Stirling II worked on the house, while formal gardens were laid out by James Niven.
The Home Farm dates from the 1840's

My only reason for not wanting to move into the farm tomorrow is that "Income from the family's estates in Jamaica" almost certainly means slavery.

Interesting history...you would be surprised how many places have been built on the back of slavery in one form or another, a lot of UK MP's left and right have had mansions handed down to them from generations involved in this trade but don't like talking about it.

Thanks enjoyed that.

Nicely put together post Jack, we find slavery abhorrent and rightly so but back then it was acceptable and shouldn't detract from the buildings that were erected from the profits accrued, Thanks

Hi TravelswithJack.
I've spotted this one and thought about nipping in at some point.
Do you drive? Did you park right outside the main gate(?) plenty of space to park but not quite incognito..
Did you go inside any of the buildings and how would you describe the condition of the interior and floors?
Thanks

Morning,

I drove as it's a few miles from the nearest town. I parked outside the unoccupied lodge and had a wee look inside. If you get there and figure out what the carvings on the pediment mean let me know. Not Greek.
I didn't try to do more than poke my head into doorways and it seems the upper floors have gone but the lower ones are stone. There are a number of occupied cottages in the park and a children's nursery so a few folk around. My cunning disguise is that of a woman in her middle years with a child in tow.
We have done a couple of other sites in Fife, Dumfries and Perth over the past week so might post them. Keeps the boy off his Xbox.
Good luck.
