Hi All

Residential - never thought in a million years I`d ever post in this dark corner of DP.

Dinas Mawddwy is where I stay when I`m photographing jets, but a mate pointed me in the direction of what remains of the old "Plas Dinas Mawddwy" the main house was demolished in the 1960`s,there is plenty still on the site if you hunt about.

I met one of the locals who lives on the site now and she said Italian POW`s were kept there during the war but I can`t find any record of this.
Also others say the building to the north east of the site is an "Ice house" or a chapel.

Concrete bases remain of the walled garden and the Gothic coaching house.

History-Y Plas or Plas Buckley was completed in 1872 for the newly titled Sir Edmund Buckley. The house was a grandiose Tudor or Gothick style mansion with a tall central tower and prominent gables. It was consumed by fire c.1920 and the shell was cleared c.1960.

Other buildings on site look like they have a military past.

Then on to the Ice house or chapel (you choose)

Hopefully going to this place on Monday, looks very interesting, and great photos by the way

Nice set of images. The out of the way building is the all important Ice House - no self respecting 'Gentleman' in the latter 1800's built a new house without one and anyway when one walks the site, you realise the location and alignment is completely wrong for a religious building. Italian POW's certainly worked on this site after the surrender of the Italian Forces. When the Italians surrendered, the POW's in UK could not be repatriated because the Germans had taken control of all the Italian assets - not that many Italians wanted to go back to Italy and be conscripted into the remains of the Italian forces that were fighting under German control. Most of the Italians gladly took up work on UK farms and made a valuable contribution to growing food crops and tending animals. Some of the Italian Officer Class; who lost family in the Nazi purges of the Italian Gentry, actually stayed in the UK and managed to start new lives. The locally produced ice-cream of my early teens was the product of one of these 'new lives'. Fancy one right now as I swelter in the heat!!

That’s some awesome information and background, so it looks like the ice house notion holds up.
Next time I’m in Dinas I’ll have a word with the locals and give them the info.
Most of the locals don’t know anything about the place.

Cheers Newage.

Funny isn't it that 'locals' never seem to see what is directly under their noses, unless one is really interested in your surroundings. Still; that very fact years ago got a young teenager searching the printed matter for info on Sprotbrough Hall, and started my long journey to this Forum! Spent a lot of time in the Dinas area years ago with a Welsh mate, who I first met in my local pub, after he had been transferred to the old British Ropes (Bridon) Doncaster factory. He showed me some very interesting sites in Wales, for which I have been ever grateful!
