What's that second wire mesh hatch for? I've only seen one of those fitted to one other post, and that was one that had been converted for use as a large underground water tank. Did you not try draining the water out with the pump? It's good to stop it before the level gets too high to do anything about it.

Im not sure what the steel grate was for, ive not seen one before either.....
The pump was seized, its been pumped out before (i think in 2001) and you can still see the tide mark.

If you go back there at any point, see if you can't fix it with a bit of oil. I've heard of them being freed up, though I don't really know.

whats with the red spring assy? Ive not visited as many posts as some of the veterans on here, but must have visited and entered 20 plus posts and never seen it before.is it an aid to or replacement for the usual counterweight assy? Cheers simon

I've seen a few posts with the steel grate but all of them have been removed and have been inside the toilet. This is the first time I have seen them in situe.

The pump handle is not seized because myself and boothy loosened it up a little a few weeks back, however it is bust internally. We know who owns it and we are going to see about pumping it out and having a tidy up very soon.

Buckminster Torlift hatch

Torlift hatches were used on Posts which were considered 'vulnerable' - either to vandals or CND.

They were introduced in the '80's and were usually part of a range of security measures which also included FSM blanking plates which were secured from inside the post (ie no external bolts) and metal vent louvres rather than wooden (many with mesh as well).

I think the idea of the heavy grill on the Post hatch was so that the hatch could be left open for fresh air etc with the grill preventing any external access (the grills have 2 bolts that can only be operated from inside the access shaft). They are pretty heavy items and I suspect would have been a right pain to continually move when operating the Post - hence most seem to have ended up in the toilt cubicle not being used)
