This forum is set to become extremely busy as interest in ROC posts is very high, and after the demise of 28DL this will now become the up to date database of monitoring posts. For this reason it would seem a good idea to set a naming convention for forum threads to keep things tidy and make information about a given post easy to find.

Could people therefore please title their threads about a given ROC post in the following format:

xxxxxxx ROC Post - xxxxxxx Group - Month Year - Anything else

'Group' as used here is the name of the county as given on SubBrit. The date is optional but useful and you can add anything of particular interest AFTER the main post data. e.g. 'FSM Tube Camera', or 'Not Demolished'.

By following this convention the forum will remain tidy and easy to navigate as it fills up. If you sort the forum by thread title rather than date, you will then get all topics relating to a given ROC post together. Including the group name means people can easily find information about all their local posts with a simple search.

It is also nice to include a link to the SubBrit page within any topic.

Happy exploring,
Matt.

PS I believe Krela is going to sticky this after making any appropriate edits.

Just a suggestion, but wouldnt having the group first make more sense:

xxxxxxx Group - xxxxxxx ROC Post - Date - Anything else

Then you have all of one area / group together if sorting by name, and then it would still automatically sort by the site name next and collect those together secondarily.

Your second post and already you are telling us how to post. Shame on you

I expected that ;) but I did discuss it with Krela first! I wouldn't be so brazen to tell you lot what to do on a second post otherwise :)

Ref comment above about hierarchy: it does make sense from a strict logic point of view, but I think generally people are more interested in specific posts than groups so having that as the primary field works best. On the occasion you do want to view a whole group the search will work effectively.

Yes I asked him to write this, so don't jump the gun :)

When you guys have decided how to do the naming I'll make it official.

Shepy your suggestion is a good one... assuming people manage to keep the spelling and format of the group name consistent.

If this forum gets very busy I may give it it's own moderator to keep things shipshape.

As with any forum, spelling is quite often an issue, but if it gets its own mod then obviously corrections could be made.

I just thought it might be better if they were by group because then people could easy sort and see all the ones in their immediate area etc.

Yes that would seem sensible.

I guess it's a toss up between finding things easily by group or finding things easily by post name.

I'm not sure which is more valuable really, given that I'm not desperately keen on encouraging people to be able to easily find everything in their local area on a plate. I prefer leaving people to figure it out for themselves.

Okay I think we'll stick with the original format. I've just adjusted it slightly as exact visit dates are frowned upon here.

There's always the google earth files if people want to find their closest roc posts.

I'm not sure if this is possible with Vbulletin, but as an idea what about a drop down box to select the group from, as there's only 31 groups. It would make it more consistant and cut down on the spelling errors etc, and also means people are more likely to post new topics including the group name.

Just an idea I thought I'd throw into the pool.

It is possible, and a damn good idea.

If someone could give me the list of group names that would be the perfect solution.

Hmm interesting one this.. for example Erdington and Frankley are part of Coventry group, but in the county of Warwickshire.

Personally I like to refer to them by group, rather than county. But I'm happy to go which ever way you decide!

I didnt actually mean county specifically

most people seem to use "Somerset Group" instead of "Group No. 12 - Bristol"

Yes, group name seems most logical as that's how they are listed on SubBrit.

You would probably want two drop-downs, one for country to narrow it down then one for group, but that's getting complicated! (In an ideal world you would then have all the posts listed, but probably getting a bit OTT!). If any of the ROC aficionados have the programming ability then it would make for an awesome database though.

OK, this is getting confusing.

As I understand it there were 29 (not 31 as I said, there's 2 gaps!) ROC groups each with a group HQ that the posts would be attributed to. Unfortunitely these did not correlate to counties, except where they could do so easily, e.g Kent, Essex and the like are pretty much grouped by county)

A good example would be Group 12 (Bristol) which would most likey cover North Somerset, south Gloucestershire and west whitshire With Group 9 (Yeovil) covering South somerset and Dorset, and group 14 (winchester) taking in Hampshire and south/east whiltshire. It makes it hard without an official map to know where the boundaries were for the different groups.

So how you group them depends if you want to go by the 29 groups as they were devided up when the ROC was setup, or by county (which is the list mattc has posted)
