It had been raining for about an hour before we got to the post. We found the track that leads to the post and parked up. At least it had stopped raining. We walked down the track but couldn't see the post, we had the post marked on my OS map with a 6 figure grid ref from subbrit but that gives you 100 square meters to look in. the Track was bounded by chest high bracken obscuring our view. Buster did somthing he should never have done, volunteered to go on a recce. Off he waded through the bracken and on to the high ground. When he got to the top he could see the post and signalled me and Pegasus2 to follow him up. it had now started to rain again Buster was already soaked to the skin from wading through the bracken.

The hatch was promptly opened and we descended in to the post.

The coke cans down there were the old type with the removable ringpull.

The rain was still falling when it came time to leave. It was decided to go back a more direct route to the track. However when we got to within 2 meters of the track our path was blocked by a stream you couldn't see because of the bracken.

We were all now soaked to the skin and had to go back up the hill and back the way we came.

My jeans and Busters combats were twice the weight because of the water thay had soaked up. We still had the drive back to York to do. Trousers were removed and I had to drive back in just my boxers. Good job we didn't get stopped by the law!!

how dare you sir!!
i am always leading for the front!!!
was a good trip but your right we were all soaked!!
shame there was nothing inside apart from that battery ;)
good day and good times were had by all

Moral of the story is if you have waterproofs at home they are no good there when the rain starts comming down and you are 20 miles away from home. my kit still hasn't dried out!

If you have a SNCO with you send them first!

yeah that is true!
waterproofs will be taken on the next road trip i think.
have to let me know how the 'other post ' the one we couldn,t get it is when you go next and me and peg might go if its worth a look

Hey guys good posting.
I know the area around there quite well but have not heard of anything like this up there.
What is it/was it and where abouts is it?

It is a Royal Observer Corps (ROC) nuclear bunker. There were over 1500 of them built round the country you were never more than 8 miles from one during the 60's.

They were used for gathering information if WWIII ever broke out.

They would use a 4 pin hole camera set up known as a GZI (Ground Zero Indicator) to plot where the nuclear bomb had gone off. Each 'camera' facing N,E,S & W.

They also had a thing called a Bomb Power Indicator (BPI) which would measure the pressure wave created by the blast.

The third main thing they had was a Fixed Survey Meter (FSM) which would measure the amount of radiation.

All this information would by sent to group HQ's.

The bunker is located at OS Grid Ref: SE 4540 9783

Buster emerging from the hatch. Taken from the somewhat questionable refuge of the roofless orlit lol. Altho you can't see it in this photo, the rain is going sideways and busters face is one of utter resentment for the weather lol
