Hay folks, well are little road trip to Norfolk was a good one and there was a good few sites covered so I will break it up into sections so I don’t bore you all too much. Well myself and my fellow urbex partners in crime (or should I say grime) which was kathyms and chris34 set of at 9 in the morning as there was a good few miles to cover. Well after a tank of petrol and the sun was starting to go down we managed to get some great shots. So before I proceed please accept my apologies as I could not find much history of some of these sites we visited but was interesting all the same.
So on with the shots and as i know some of you have a great interest in pillbox’s I will start with this one which is set in a lovely spot next to the biggest ww2 memorial I have ever seen on the way to Great Yarmouth so I hope you enjoy. Alex

Thanks for looking and i will post the second bit shortly

The Monument obviously predates both the First and Second World Wars, so I am somewhat surprised that you haven't found any history. The column was obviously built on some large estate, as either a 'folly' or memorial of sorts to some person or battle and the addition of WW2 dead suggests that they might have been employed on the estate. Are there any WW1 personnel inscribed?

As you did not include any meaningful photographs of any plaques/inscriptions or give a more specific clue to where the memorial is, it is somewhat difficult for anybody interested in unique or different War Memorials, as I am, to pursue the subject. I am sure it is well known to people living in Norfolk/Suffolk, but I have not glimpsed it from the route I have taken when visiting Great Yarmouth over the years

Following added 26th April 2011 after location was revealed by subsequent posts - just shows how initial impressions can be wrong, as to the age of of a structure, if one relies on architectural style.

The following is from English Heritage's Listed Buildings Register.

Memorial, Elveden
Description: War Memorial
Grade: II
Date Listed: 7 May 1954
English Heritage Building ID: 275756
Local Authority: Forest Heath
County: Suffolk
Country: England

Listing Text

Monument, 1921, by Clyde Young. A war memorial to the dead of the 3 parishes
of Elveden, Icklingham and Eriswell (whose boundaries meet at this point), who
died in the Great War, 1914-1919. A Corinthian column about 30 metres high and
surmounted by an urn. The lofty square moulded base contains a door in the
north face, giving access to a newel stair which rises the full height of the
monument. On 3 faces are plaques bearing the names of the dead from each of
the respective parishes; added to each is a further plaque with names of those
who died in the war of 1939-1945.

That isn't a problem, Alex. The only rule is not to give access info re getting into places, but this doesn't apply here as it's in the open and accessible to anyone.

Enjoyed your tour. That's something I enjoy too...just wandering around and finding interesting places. Cheers. :)
