Found this while out and about today and thought it may be of some interest to someone. It is some sort of water cistern all be it the largest one I have personally seen. It's purpose, judging by it's location, would have been for crop irrigation but if anyone knows exactly what it was for then I would love to know. anyway here's the pics

That looks interesting...your water tank theory looks like it could be right...maybe some other members have the gen? Thanks mate:)
 
Hello mate this just a thought but is it anywhere near a old railway line could be the remains of a water tower
 
nice one alex I'll have a look on my old maps and see what I can find. There is a Victorian water pumping station about 1 to 2 miles away as the crow flies and the area had quite a few colliery's (2 within 1/2 a mile to a mile)
 
Here's a map of the area. I thought it was a light anti aircraft emplacement from GE but obviously it wasn't lol having a quick look on some old maps it doesn't look like any railway lines ran nearby
