This old Baronial mansion house based near the village of Drymen was originally designed an built by William Burn for the Duke of Montrose between 1852-1858. The building was originally owned by the Clan Buchanan but due to signficant debts was sold to the Clan Graham- they remained there until 1925.

Five years later the site turned into a hotel up until ww2 where it was used as a hospital to treat injured military personnel. Its most remembered patient was Rudolf Hess- the deputy fuhrer to Adolf Hitler. On the last leg of his flight to Scotland to try and negotiate peace with the UK he crashed. Hess was treated for an injured ankle.

After the war ended the building was used briefly as an Army school for education.

Closing its doors in 1954 the roof was removed to avoid paying taxes.

Between 2002-2004 plans for re development were saught after but refused.

This truly stunning abandoned site has now been taken over by nature. The outside is now inside creating a magical place to take photos and walk around. It is still easy to imagine this once grand building even though its now just a shell of it former self.

Unlike other abandoned buildings there is a sense of tranquillity. Each room has its own personality caused by the different types of plants and trees growing. Ivy scatters itself around windows and up walls. The trees have made themselves at home growing up through the floors. Fireplaces are still evident as is the main structure- some now starting ti crumble. There is a dark underground layer that houses big halls and rooms- evidence of damp covers the walls with only the faintest bit of sunlight creeping in from above.

This appeared to be a popular place for urban explorers, photographers and film makers ans it is easy to see why- Free on a Sunday and fancy a drive then it is worth it.
