Not yet derelict but most of the gravel pits are!
Unusual bit of transport brought about by the inability of the sand company to secure the land between their two sites.
The sand/gravel is picked up next to the M50 where it crosses the river and transported in 80-90 tonne loads for 2 miles to the gradeing plant south of Upton.

Empty, note freeboard.

Christ a mighty!!!......In that first pick of a 'loaded' barge there sure as hell ain't a lot of room for any choppy water is there????...
I reckon that'd be a bit un-nerving sailing up the river in one of them barges loaded as heavily as that............:)

Probably why the cabin door is open?

Wow ! I fish this stretch of the severn quite often, these barges are about the biggest thing on the river these days, its near the village of Ripple, its all free fishing on this stretch, good for Barbel , Pike , Zander
the barges only travel about 4/5 miles to the unloading dock upstream primarily to save on road transport through the villages around the area

Severn Sand transport.

The pick up point is about 3/4 mile from Ripple, almost under the motorway.

LOL, thats just mad, it must still be more economic to use the barges than go by road or get yer own access then. Would not like to be in one of those barges if it / gets windy, floods, gets a bit choppy.

I think there may be incentives/grants etc to tranport by river plus there's the sheer volume you get from a large barge.
Road access from pit to works is horrendous.

That's really good to see working barges like that. It makes perfect sense to use them too, what with the amount of commuter traffic etc, these days. Interesting report. :)

I seem to recall that they used to transport coal to the power stations on the River Trent, not sure how many of these are still working.
there was also a fair bit of sand/gravel traffic on the River Soar.
