Lime kilns to the south of Johnshaven Kincardineshire.
During late 18 & early 19th century lime was quarried close to the kilns.
The lime was deposited in to the top of the kiln and fires lit at the bottom to burn of the inpuritys in the lime.
The lime was then carried down the coast and loaded on to boats and sent south.
During the second world war the structue was converted and used by the home guard, as a look out.

Nice. Its always good to see lime kilns on here. In a very nice area too!

It's always good to find these relics. :) I would love to see one of these kilns actually working - I bet the polution police would faint if they saw that! Thanks for sharing these with us.

ooooh excellent find, and excellent pics. Didn't realise they went in so far. Love all the stone work, and brick work. Great to know they had another use during the war.

There's a couple of these next to each other at the side of the A38 in Derbyshire. Will have to try and get closer to get some pics of those two.

oooooooooh and forgot, there's the lime kilns near Buxton as well. Communist Daughter took some pics there a while ago.

Cheers, again, enjoyed looking at these.

:) Sal
