The Obelisk was erected on ‘a grassy knoll’ to commemorate the centenary of the landing in this country of William of Orange and his wife Mary, and the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688-9.
The inscription above, now impossible to decipher through weathering read:
Vindicatae Libertatis Publicae Anno Centesimo
Salutis MDCCLXXXVIII
