Went for a wander with my girlfriend to take a look at these dove type pillboxes. The boxes not only protected the river as they flank an old railway embankment and bridge. Heres the pics

Just prior to the bridge note the pillboxes on either side of the river

Very interesting.Never seen any like that before. Thanks for posting

Very nice mate. The HDR looks great. I love pillboxes, they always interest me. Is there any more around that stretch or river?Cheers.;)

What a great mix . Old railways and those Pillboxes. I have never seen anything like them.:)

Good post, fez. :)
That first pillbox looks more like a section post though. Were there weapons slits along the rear wall?

Foxy those Pillboxes really are unusual. Do you think they were built by the rail company itself or a different body?

Nice one, Fezzy, I like these, had a few wanders along there, the slant roofed pillboxes along the river Dove are a type only found in that area, according to a book i have.
Did you get as far as the almost sunken type 24 further along mate?

I didn't mate, U free tomorrow afternoon for a wander down?

Don't really know for sure, Black. But I'd imagine they were originally planned on RE maps by the MOD.
Sometimes, the planned types became variant, depending on the local materials and skills available with odd quirks of their own, also depending upon who actually interpreted the plans and built them.

Should be going indoor climbing, fezzy, so I'll have to pass this time, but will have to have a wander soon, and you can show me those mushroom type pillboxes you visited too. come climbing instead if you like! :)

Wow so in essence some of the guys who built them even had a little bit of a licence for some local creativity as long as the building was functional.

Enough of this pillbox talk, why isn't there a picture of your smokin' hot woman posing in front of some WW2 concrete? :)

Um, not really...I don't think they were 'allowed' so much. It's just that some of them had the same attitude to plans that I have...understand it as if it's written in Serbo-Croat, look at it upside down, throw it away and cobble it together how I think it should go! ;)

Plenty along there and generaly in good condition - usually more standard design though. The DoB database has them covered quite well.
