Just a few images from old scanned photos approx 10 years old of the John Mowlem shellproof type 24 "drum" pillboxes.
I personally have visited and seen 16 of this design [including two 6Pdr drums] along the River Wey and Tillingbourne between Godalming and Chilworth.
Most are in excellent condition probably being due to their remote position with cleanish interiors. The outer steps on the loopholes have metal plates inset to prevent spalling/splintering of the concrete.
One book on this subject quote that only up to a dozen were built, but miss the fact that many are totally round with only two /or three? actually being built to the D shape.

The DoB has it that 27 of these were built by Mowlems and I believe they are unique to this stretch of river.

love the shape of them. very different from your usual type 22's. Nice one
