Righto after taking Mr Bones advice I have decided to post a separate set of pics of an early 19 th century Windpump by the side of the River Ant at Ludham deep in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Not exactly a difficult place to get to just very muddy underfoot and nearly ended up in the River twice! The Windmill was requisitiond by the local Home Guard and turned into what was a Two Storey Pillbox complete with Embrasures and inner Blastwall albeit a small one!. Further up the Coast was this weird Pillbox, I have a feeling that the cone on the top may be an Anti Aircraft Mounting

Thanks Foxy, the second one was a long way into a field and very wet so I didnt fancy a tromp across in case I couldnt get out!!!

Great set B.S. That's definitely an AA gun mountiing on top of the pillbox, there are a fair few other examples around the country but they are far from common. I sail on the Hunter Fleet every year with a group rather infamously known locally as the Bitter Boys and we always stop off at Ludham Bridge for the night so I make a point of visiting this windmill every year. There is actually another spigot mortar base buried up to the top directly opposite on the other bank. It's pintle is often used as a mooring point.

great stuff as usual BS how come you always find a spigot mortar whilst out and about.I went to look for one the other day. After searching the t'internet found several different sites that mentioned the same place (not on the DoB). everything looked promising till I got there and what did I find... sweet bugger all... still keep up the good work mate

Thanks CP its nice to be appreciated. I believe this was to Protect the Bridge and the River from German Invasion Forces. There were an awful lot of these near watercourses in my vicinity!

Thanks Jonney. Do you think the Cone is an Oerlikon Mounting?

It might well be, if this anything to go by [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oerlikon_20_mm_cannon"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oerlikon_20_mm_cannon[/ame]

Got to say though, it's a hell of an exposed position, but we don't know what it was protecting.

I know exactly what its protecting Historian! there is a Radar site about 50 yards up the cliff away from the Pillbox. This is near the North Sea!!!:)

Sorry mate! The radar station is still in use but has the GolfBall style dome now.:)

Nope, wrong one.

There is the happisburgh chain home low about 300 yards inland to the pillbox, now being used as a farm store.

Hi Black Shuck, how you doing?

Fancy a trip to have a look at the two B24 crash sites and (possible) aux unit base at felmingham?
