No rugby at my local club due frost,so set off with the dog to check out some pillboxes near Hartford End.Parked next to the now closed Ridleys Brewery.

First up were a couple of Spigot Mortar bases in the meadow next to the bridge over the Chelmer.

First pillbox was this Variant which I'd call aMG post-four sided ,large embrasures on three sides with a blast wall behind.

Next up was a type 28a,descrided on various sites as double chambered, but looked like a normal 28a to me!

At this one the footpath goes between the pillbox and the blast wall.

It was then back in the car toHowe Street to look back the way I had come.

Two points of intrest-nearly all had there internal shuttering still in place, second, all the sturdier pillboxes were along the river while on the higher ground behind were the type22s to give protective fire.

It makes a nice little walk, all on grass,no more than a mile.

Excellent report Philip, the ones that used internal corrugated iron shuttering often have it preserved, it's out of the weather and a lot of hassle to nick.

I like that report, I could spend ages looking round that lot. I have found a few with the shuttering in place but have yet to come across a spiggot morter base :)
