A bit further south we spotted a loopholed wall / defended building The owner was happy enough for us to take pics from the gate but wouldnt let us have a closer look (thank you zoom lens)

Then S0014010 with the ladder and brackets on the roof the other listed next to it (S0013127) on the dob must be an error or the roc post just behind it as theres nothing else there and S0013130 listed as between this and the sloped one isnt there either

very nice pillbox porn there mate, we do like our lozenge's up north don't we lol. cracking stuff

Rich, the bulges under the large embrasures indicate they were for a VMG. Eared pillboxes have them too although I don't know what purpose they served.

Good work Rich. I was under the impression that the 'bulge' accommodated the container for the condensor tube on the Vickers. Don't know this for a fact though.

I'm interested to know if there were there 3 circular indentations in a triangle pattern on the ledge below the small embrasures of the lozenge S0013139 btw?

What kind of bird is that in pic 17?? Did it have a nest in there?

Its a Swallow it came in the door and went straight out of one of the embrasures.not sure who jumped the most us or the bird  Yea there was a nest as well thats about the fifth swallows nest in pillboxes so far this year

Wow you have certainly got out and about to get these shots! Very interesting locations! Was there a seagull actually in flight in one of the pill boxes!!?? I admire you folks into military history and know all sorts of codes and names for the various pill boxes, its great! I have a snorkle if your going on a revisit lol

Thanks I enjoyed that!

According to papers from the time, they were there to reinforce the wall under the large embrasure, so that the Vicker's crew did not get wounded from debris spalling off the inner wall. The crew positions for a traversing Vickers placed the loader/belt handler in a position that was in the debris field from the inner wall face, if sustained fire or explosive force hit the normal exterior face of the structure. However, talking over the years to people who actually manned coastal defences seems to indicate that some mods were done so that larger weapons could be used in the structures. Dire times meant that things were changing all the time and did not always follow the 'Written Document'.

Amazing what the sea & nature can do to concrete over time. I take it the owner was not keen on you looking in the barn then, must be distrustful in case you were looking to nick something. Wonderful photos
