A few photos of the emergency water supply for the ammo dump at Monkton Farleigh. These two fairly large ponds...about 35 foot square and approx.5foot deep were built to contain water for fire fighting purposes should there be a fire underground.Personally if a fire broke out in an ammo dump my reaction would be to run like hell, never was really made of hero material I guess.

1 the first of the two ponds

6 the second pond shrouded by dense vegetation of the very scratchy kind this was the only shot I could get but it's identical with the first

7 The rest of the photos are of the adjacent pump house

8 power supply

10 pump bed

11 outlet pipe the supply to the dump

12the inlet pipe the feed through the wall comes from the second pond the branch on the left comes from the first

13the feed from the first pond this links to the branch in the previous picture

14 original fuse box

15 replacement box and a spaghetti junction of conduit

16wall mounted heater I guess to stop the pump from freezing in winter

17 close up of the heater

18And finally I spotted another set of pylon supports for the overhead ropeway

You and me both chap. Nice shots

nice to see some of the other parts of the ammo dump mate, the boring bits as some might see them compared to the rest of it, but I think you don't get a feel for a place until you scratch around in the brambles and the nettles. cheers mate

This is more good stuff OS. I am definitely thinking that a return visit is in order, with you as guide. I will talk to the Fluffster about it this weekend. Thanks for sharing!

Mind you I don't think running away would do a lot of good, remember what happened at Fauld in 1944 when part of the RAF ammo dump there blew up killing 70 people, approx 4000 tons of HE went up a lot less than the tonnage stored in Farleigh I don't think you could run fast enough.........

The crater left is about 90 foot deep and 1/4 mile across

as it looks now

as it was after it happened, spot the debris craters surrounding the main one

Godzy would love to be a guide but unfortunately my job means I have to work weekends but any tips as to where all the bits are including a bit of concrete porn I've been told about but haven't looked for yet please PM me

the craziest thing about Fauld was that the most deaths occured above ground and in particular at the nearby Gypsum works when a reservoir was breached. The underground barriers between stores were so effective that it meant that only a third of it went up and some people underground at the time survived.

All this makes me think about that American boat sunk in the Thames Estuary loaded with several thousand tonnes of HE. Sit on that Boris...you and your Thames Gateway!

Not to worry mate - we might make it part of our annual summer excursion (courtesy of Fluffytours!) rather than a weekend job!

Ah yes the SS Richard Montgomery I know it well.I was born on the Isle of Sheppey and my school was on the coast, used to spend a lot of time staring out the window and wondering what would happen if it went bang. You used to be able to take a pleasure trip round it and I did here tell tales of lads catching mighty conger eels whilst wreck fishing. There's info about the ship here

The EWS probably supplied a sprinkler or drencher system. Mind you, I think running away is sound advice. If you are really bored and aint already got a headache you could work out how long the water would last! :(

I am starting to run out of excuses to the missus as to why my jeans are torn again by bramble....let alone the scratches on my body.....
