This is my first post so be nice to me :)

I cant say where this is as it is a sensitive site and has not been touched by the chav graffiti types and would like to keep it that way.

I hope you all understand, I know its not much of a report, but any information regarding the type of pill box would be appreciated.

Nothing worse than having an old historic building covered in spray paint.

Its an old disused airfield in County Antrim, with little remaining of the airfield except a few out buildings and a couple of hangers, which I have some photos of for a future post.

The airfield itself was used by both UK and US troops during the war.

the pill box is open but I didnt manage to get in to it this time, hopefully in the next few weeks I will.

I hope you like the photos

We wouldn't be anything but nice to you mate, welcome. :)

If this is where I think it is then your first pillbox is a strongpoint. Seems to be quite the norm for NI WW2 airfields. The second has the look of a type 26 but Air Ministry had their own ideas about pillbox design.

Do you already have cptpies DOB overlay for Google Earth? If these sites are recorded the overlay should give you more info.

You could probably safely put up the DOB ref for the boxes as your average chav/graf/thief would think it a secret code and go back to watching Come X ice factor pop dancing idol or something equally inane.

People like us wouldn't damage them and your local neds (the most likely to cause damage) would already know about the site anyway.

If there is something like a Turnbull mount with cradle for instance (ie of historical value) or it's not on the DOB, you would be advised to report it with a view to having it properly preserved.

The NI SMR sites were added recently but there is not a lot of info regarding type and condition other than what I added myself AS they were taken from a SHP file rather than from the online database.

Thanks to you all for your comments.

The Pill box does appear on the DOB overlay but has stated in cptpies post there isnt a lot of information regarding the pill box.
Irishmanlost your quite correct in your post, it was famous for something else in its day.

I did find behind the hangers there are 2 air raid shelters 1 is blocked up and the other has been partially opened, I presume these are for the workers in the hangers. I did manage to get in and take a look but there is nothing in there to date it etc.

I am going to see if the other Pill box as shown on the DOB overlay is still there or if it has been removed during the works that are taking place there.
