Raf stallingbourough is a large heavy gun emplacement built during the Second World War.built to protect the large port of Grimsby from enemy bombers.the site consists of four gun emplacements which housed four 5.25" guns, below were sleeping quarters, workshop and toilets..on the top level with the gun mounts are housing units for the shells.the guns rotated 360 degrees meaning that the artillery was always to hand.it is rumoured it was the largest gun emplacement outside of Dover..

Raf stallingbourough or Rad stallingbourough.

Neither is correct, it should be just Stallingbourough HAA site. Interesting place and substantially built for an HAA, but it doesn't look anywhere near big enough to claim the title of being biggest outside of Dover. It only has 4 emplacements, albeit of the 5.25" variety which is unusual. Some on the south coast had 8 and even 12 emplacements.

Nice one Mikey.

Thank you krela I did read it was known as raf Stallingborough amongst several other names..I did wonder if it was the second biggest.harwich fort is huge..but maybe they just meant on the gun size rather than the site itself.

It has never been known as RAF Stallingbourough. ;)

There was a nearby WW1 era airfield known as RAF Stallingbourough which was decommissioned in 1919, but this is not it. This is an HAA site, which has nothing to do with the RAF.

This site is a very late HAA build hence it's more developed and fortified design compared to most. The majority of HAA sites were built in 1939 with another smaller building phase in late 42/early 43. There was a 1939 build HAA site here too with 4 4.7" AA guns, but it has since been demolished. This particular part of the site only became operational in Nov 1944 and because of it's unique nature it has been Grade II listed, for what it's worth.

Thank you for the extra info there krela..my mistake ☺ I did know it was a late site in 1944 but never knew it was grade 2 listed.like you say though.for what it is worth.I should think by 1944 them guns were hardly fired in anger

Nice! Nature really does give this place it's beauty and you captured that very well.
