Greenville Battery Maker Cornwall 1/09

Maker Battery is located in Cornwall and overlooks Plymouth sound. Historic info taken from pillboxesuk site.
(mods can you change the heading from greenville to maker got my place names wrong )

This battery was originally built as a 3-gun battery, and in 1901 was equipped with 4.7in quick-firing guns. These were flanked by 2 lookout posts. The battery was abandoned by the War Department in 1948.

this is another part of the bunker between the two gun turrets, and as you can see was filled with junk.


Lift for the shells this was found at both ends of the bunker


But there was some interesting stuff like this grinding wheel ?

dude this is actually "maker battery" with maker HAA and barracks behind it in the fields.....

grenville battery is actually inside a small fort a bit closer to the coast....lots of pikeys in there tho.... might catch you guys up later if your out - having a wanky day so far!

yer me and scrub look at Greenville Battery but didnt realse till we got there that it was a fort. Never saw any pikies the place was lock up tight unluckly .

The 'pivots' on those old mountings are gun barrels aren't they???
Probably some very old muzzel loaders that were obsolete/spare when the battery was originally built maybes???
Only guessing but they look like some kinda old cannons????? great stuff anyways!


And that last photo.........looks like an old 'Landmaster Rotovator' but its missing the 'boom' off the front that used to have the rotors on.......worked on loads like that when I worked in my Dads Horticultural workshop..........many ....many.....years ago!

And can you get me one of those old galvanised hen food dispensers in the photo above?? please ? Cheers ! Can't find one local to me at all !

its a "c" pivot for a 12.5" muzzle loader...i dont think it ever had a gun mounted on it from what i recall....

ive done all the batteries in the area, might start a thread to sum up my findings if ppl are interested!

Plenty of the batteries on Portland hve similar mounts, utilising old RML muzzels, also on Brean down if I remember correctly. It was quite a common thing of the era.
