Hi all

Fluffy wanted to go and have a look at Chatterley Whitfield coal mine as he said you could get mega pictures from the hill side that over looks the site, so off we popped just to have a look as you do and what do you know bish bash bosh in you go.

Chatterley Whitfield coal mine started operation in 1860 and finally closed down in 1976 and it sat there ever since.
The mine had 4 shafts - Hesketh, Platt, Institute and Winstanley (But there evidence of 9 pits on the site).
The main chimney built in 1891 stands at a height of 225 feet and it a monster (the top 25 feet was removed in 1976 pity).

This is a link to AditNow history on the site and it`s well worth a read.

I remember my Dad went there when the museum was open as he brought back as coaster with the logo on, which was around the house for years after.

IIRC the museum closed down because there had to be a rescue team available & after the other mines in the area closed they were disbanded.
