Cocking Lime works - May 2021

Hi all

The last day of our 3 day road trip saw us head from Portsmouth to Surrey and on the way we stopped at Cocking Lime works we also had a look at the
nearby chalk quarry, not much too see in the quarry but a couple of rusting bits of heavy plant.

Be warned - the tops of the lime kilns are a death trap waiting to bite and one or two of the building are not for this world much longer.

First the Quarry...........

Then a walk back to where we started and a look at the Lime works, nature is taking over..........

Looking the bottom of the Kilns (they look innocent from the bottom)

BUT....................when you get to the top they are well lets just say NOT solid, everything to the left of the KIln pit`s is rusting iron work.....

The baby face shovel is cool. Must admit I had a look around Cocking about eight years ago after a visit to Shoreham cement works, and Cocking looks pretty much unchanged … is the Leyland Clydesdale tipper lorry still sitting around somewhere?

Both are RB10s. When I was in the Royal Engineers we used one when building camps in Aden (1962-1964) to take troops displaced from newly independent east Africa. One joke was that RB1 was a shovel and RB2 a pick axe.

This is the lorry you are on about.

Yep that's right - the lorry looked a bit more complete and the cab wasn't tilted when I went.
