I was reading last night on a photograpy forum that flickr is being taken over/merging with SmugMug which has monthly/yearly plans like photobucket.dont know if Flickr will start charging people to host and store photos.i still use photobucket as I have always paid a small monthly fee since the beginning.and my hosting is safe until December.but they have reduced there hosting prices but they are still far too high.i think free hosting will soon be a thing of the past

I wonder how that will affect those of us who pay for Pro on Flickr? At the moment it's only around £20 a year. I only use mine just to showcase general photos and for socialising with a few photography friends that I've made there, rather than for third party hosting. Must be worrying for those who use it mainly for posting elsewhere, though. :(

It may not come to anything yet especially so for very casual users like yourself

my understanding is that flickr is to remain the same, but be better supported.

smugmug like the communit aspect of it and plan to keep that.

they have said a free service for it will remain, but whether that still means the 1tb space i'm not sure.

i was concerned about its future given i use it to link photos back to my website and on here, but it seems nothing will change in that regard. i suspect they will align some of their pricing schemes and give flickr pro users access to smugmug specific services like the shop element.

in all honesty, given the modern world, the fact we have had 1tb for free for this long is a novelty

They've been very careful with their wording and said nothing will change "in the immediate future".

I very much doubt the free hot-linking service will remain for much longer, but how much they'll charge remains to be seen.
