Hi all
Day 9

Off to the Metz/Verdun area and a visit too 2 forts, fort Sommy and Fort St Blaise (More of that one later) these two formed part of the Verdun fortification
group.
Building started in 1899 by the German army, the forts were used all the way in to WW1 by the German army then at the end of WW1 they passed in to
French hands and some extras were added, then come 1940 and the German`s rock up again and took over the forts, then in 1944 the US and the French
re-captured the forts - blimey talk about changing hands.

There is massive damage to Fort Sammy, I think this was done by the good old boys of the US army at the end of WW2.
Fort Sommy was quite small in relation to other forts of the region as it was built to house only 200 men and had a mixture of 150mm and 100mm artillery
in steel turrets.

Picture time...................

In one of the lower level room every wall is still covered in old art work - crazy too see.

Getting up on the "roof" of the fort is one of the 150mm howitzer and one of the observation domes.
