Well this is one that we spotted on the way to somewhere else. From where we saw it from it looked prity promising.Evan more so when we pulled up outside and noticed how well it was sealed up.
Rather excited we started to look round for a way in,its not for everyone and if id have know what was ahead i wouldnt have bothered. But since we went to trouble i thought may aswell get a few photos.
Couldnt find alot of history about the place only this of the Gainsboroughs heritage page on facebook. If it only helps 1 person not to bother the dodgy enterance it will be worth it.

History
Gainsborough's Lea Road School (latterly called "South County School") was opened as Lea Road Council Scool in 1906 for the last 30 years or so till its closure in 1993 it was purely an infants school. Previous to that it was mixed infants and senior Girls, the Boys going to Benjamin Adlard.
After closure, the building was rented out as office space, but that use has fairly recently ended with the opening of a modern business centre elsewhere in the town

This one is pretty well messed up and its hoping that it will be converted into office space. A nice building on the outside but. Looking at the "then" photograph I noticed a nice ornate street lamp but looking at the "today" picture its gone.

Ornate it may have been, but those gas lights acted more as direction pointers than sources of good illumination. All removed in the late 50's, early 60's or there about - when the local gasworks ceased producing coal gas, with many ending up as a feature in local gardens. Also the clockwork timer/igniter needed winding regularly by the man with his ladder and pushbike. My memories of our local lamp lighter always seem to coincide with dark, wet or foggy afternoons - coal fires and smog were certainly problems pre smokeless days. You do not see bus conductors guiding their drivers through a pea souper, by walking in front of the slowly advancing bus or trolley these days! And all that was accompanied by a heavy sulphurous smell - happy days!
