Meig Dam, Strathconon, May 2008

Visited this with Bryag last night, purely by chance, as we thought it would be rather fun to drive over a dam on our way back from an ROC post...

And there it was :

So down we went, parked up, and had a nosey

It's got that whole serious concrete architecture thing going on

Plenty of kit attached, lord knows what most of it does

A trifle fishy...

Plenty of sound and fury :

It also had a rather groovy gantry-style crane :

Which had to be climbed

Looking down :

The crane had this attached, apparently it is a now rare 'Screen Cleaning Plough' it had us stumped at the time

Looking back at the crane :

A large shiny red knob

And finally, the reason we came

This was an great wee explore, it's certainly given me the taste for some more Hydro action ​

Obviously no chance of getting inside? I guess the control panel was inside the wee shed on top of the Crane type thingy majig?

Very interesting. It's not often you get the chance to take a detour over a dam! The closest thing we have here is Keilder reservoir. Thanks for showing.

The highlands might be sparse, remote and have families that are a bit too close , but in between the green hilly bits they do put some really interesting stuff.

Oh, and you didn't mention the midges! Little blighter's! Still, they were nowhere to be seen in middle of the dams!

Loch Meig Dam

Firstly, nearly stood on this little crater on a visit last summer

A few mechanical bitties

And irrefutable proof that Zimbob did scale the crane

A little further downstream was Orrin power station, most likely served by Meig dam

The building

A hand winch

Through the window/reflection shot thingy

Turbulent waters

And finally, the "Piece de resistance" (and Zimbob and I thought exactly the same thing when we read it)
