Park & Paterson ltd. Recycled metal for over 130 years until the company merged with Bernhard Metals in 2003 to become one of the U.Ks biggest Ingot manufacturers, sadly 12 months later the company went into administration.

The foundry was built late 19th century and later added storage buildings in the 1960s and an office block with labrotory in 1972, the site occupies 1.9 hectares and also includes two detatched houses at the entrance to the site as well as a weigh bridge.

The site has been derelict since 2004 but In March 2007 Morris homes put forward planning permission to transform the site and build 99 new residential houses on the site.

Due to the fact that the land is so badly contaminated, it has been estimated that costs would run into the millions to decontaminate it, hence the lack of interest from potential buyers.

I would imagine the ground has a lot of slag & ash from the smelting process.

The admin block is an interesting style, similar to Marple's library & the house George Best's had custom built.

Nice pics there, H. And you've also saved me the job of digging out the history of the place, cool.

Was a very chilled out day of explores today and this was the last place we hit. It's filthy, industrial and a doddle to explore, lovely, just what you want on a Bank Holiday Monday.

Really like the look of this place. Love those lights hanging down over the stairs, very 1970's lol. and love the shot of the mask. Looks like a cool place to explore, and like the history of it too. Looks like there's loads of paperwork left in the offices etc.

Nice report and excellent pics,they tell a real atmospheric story of industrial decline and decay.Glad the land cannot be used for yet more poxy matchbox flats and houses.However contaminated land near us was sealed,drained and contained and is now a massive industrial park complete with football stadium,so there is hope.

This site is mostly hemmed in by the Middlewood Way, other light industrial units & housing, so there's fairly limited scope for redevelopment.
