The History:

Well, nothing can beat the incredible reports that @HughieD does. Comprehensive and complete so visit his report for all you need to know and some fab pics as well.
In a nutshell, built in 1955 it was a munitions storage area for RAF Wittering and homed mainly four types of weapons. 1000lb high explosive bombs, 68mm SNEB rocket, BL755 cluster bombs and high explosive ordnance from USAF Lakenheath. The site was decommissioned in 1966.

The Visit:

This place is relatively local to me and to most it’s nothing special but it certainly is good for a relaxing mooch. First time out was with a friend and non member. It was a blustery day towards the end of summer. The wind through there was something else, in between driving showers. The acoustics of the bomb storage units is amazing. I can see why they held so many raves. We spent a fair bit of time at this location and ended up taking cover in a building at the front making bacon butties and coffee on my camping stove like a couple of hobos. We had to close the doors on both sides due to the wind so one can imagine the smoke buildup from cooking 😂
The second trip was with Funky Muffin 2 at the close of day in December, right before lockdown. The sun was fading fast and it was bitterly cold so only got a few photos. I was amazed at how much the place had changed graffiti wise. The buildings at the front are almost fully covered now. All photos taken on my then iPhone 6 Plus and most recently on my Huawei P30 Pro.

there was some angry guy in full camo in the woods (nature res) telling us we shouldnt be in there. I thought about arguing but didnt bother as Iv seen it so many times.
The large bunkers (scud or nuke missile ones I believe) never used to be open u know then a few years back they were all unlocked which is strange

Beware of the weirdos in the woods 😂
I think only one of the bunkers is still locked.

Thanks for looking 😊
Hi, please see my recent post about researching logistics and storage ahead of D-DAY. Please may I use some of your photographs for credits if possible? Many thanks.

The Bomb store at Harwell was demolished years ago and there is a housing estate there now. Wonder if the realise radioactive material was stored in the place o_O
Many years ago I passed this site late at night and saw the sky lit up. My passenger said at the time laughingly 'They don't need lights they just use the Radiation'.

Back in 1992/3 I regularly used to drive past the heavily guarded entrance to this store (which could be seen clearly from the road, behind several layers of barbed wire fences) on the A47. On one occasion I saw lots of smoke coming from one of the bunkers and fire engines were in attendance, needless to say I put my foot down and got away from the area as fast as possible! ;)
At the same time (1993) Harrier jets, that operated from Wittering, used that stretch of the A47 to practice operations, it was very alarming to sometimes be shadowed by a Harrier, operating at tree top height only a hundred yards or so away beside you!.

Fascinating stuff - and how much goes on we don't know about?
