I remember the family of one of my friends had the same model of Philips Stereo in the 1980s.

Well, it was noisy - there was always shouting and the clattering of the integrated mail processors (which had huge rotating drums full of packets which were spat out into appropriate shoots). I worked on delivery so I only saw the place from 04.30 onwards. I think it was busier in the evenings and at night. By the time delivery postman were coming in, most of the work was already in lorries or arrived at its destination. Ascot Road Mail Centre also had a lorry repair and servicing bay (see pictures above) and a lot of offices. Operational staff and office staff rarely came I to contact with each other. As mentioned, my abiding memory of the place was it's hugeness and gloominess. Not a pleasant place to work in at all.
