Just got a few more church reports to finish off my Norfolk jaunts with. The thing that drew me to this place was the fact that it had a round tower and the ruins were beautifully overgrown. The church itself is St Mary just near Appleton. It’s not far from the village of West Newton, to the east of the Sandringham estate. The village the church once served has completely gone. This round-towered church was constructed of carstone and flint. The tower’s arch maybe Norman, but may possibly even be pre-Conquest i.e. Saxon, circa 1000. The ruins of St Mary were overgrown, but recently they have been cleared and restored by Norfolk County Council. I think I preferred the church overgrown by the look of the pre-clearance pictures I saw but I guess this way at least the future of the ruins is going to be around for some time to come.
