Don't know if anyone is interested in this, but Test of Greatness by Brian Cathcart is a book about Britain's race to develop the atom bomb. I thought of it the other day when looking at that thread about Shoeburyness on Google maps. Shoeburyness or perhaps more correctly, Foulness (along with Fort Halstead - super secret weapons establishment in Kent) was a key site for testing the explosive Baratol which was used in Britains first attempts at making a plutonium implosion bomb. I got it out of the library, but apparently its still in print.
