Victorian Railway Tunnel converted into a WW2 Air Raid Shelter underneath a large housing estate.
The tunnel was built as part of a railway line opened in 1872.
On 17th June 1940 leased to the council by the Southern Railway for use as a public air raid shelter, half of the tunnel was filled in during conversion.
This conversion was approved by the Ministry of Home Security on 11th July 1940 and the total cost of the conversion was £394 plus £80 for temporary works.
The tunnel is now owned privately and has sat derelict for a few years and forgotten after its last use as a paint store.
