Paid a visit to Excelsior Tunnel in Cornwall the other day. What an amazing site! Have a look at the SubBrit site for more of the history.
http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/e/excelsior_tunnel/index.shtml
This is a very long tunnel, we were in there for about 3 1/2 hours
Starting from the end of the tunnel and working back towards the entrance:
A bit of graffiti at the very end
The only wooden shelter that has yet to colapse: They are made of old railway sleepers, but 50+ years of being stuck in a very damp tunnel has taken its toll.
An adit which appears to have been blocked off
This is the fate of the other shelters, the sleepers have actually become soft and spongy
One of the additional explosion chambers which were never completed
This is one of the chambers that were used to carry out the explosive tests with its loading gantry above. The actual chamber is a spherical hole cut into the rock, if you stick your head inside you get some very strange accustics!
