Standish Hospital was a specialist orthopaedics, rheumatology and respiratory care National Health Service hospital. The main building was originally a private country house. After it closed as a hospital in 2004, proposals were brought forward for redevelopment of the site, which, as I'm sure you all know, is comprehensively underway now!
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust considered reducing the number of beds at the hospital as part of a series of cost-cutting proposals, in October 2003. Although the Minister for Health at the time considered several options for the future of the hospital in March 2004, closure was ultimately confirmed and the last patients were moved to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in December 2004.
Since then, everyone and their dog has been in, done it, seen it, bought the t-shirt. I'm very late to the party, I know, but I couldn't resist one last look round!

Sadly we were only able to access the Northern most ward. Security live on site 24/7 as I'm sure you all know, and while it was easy to get access to that one building, and most of the site, it's also very easy to be seen. I did have a lovely chat with the onsite chap though, who said the only reason we couldn't continue looking through all the rest of the remaining buildings, was due to the high number of excavators and machinery onsite. I did question that none of it was moving at the time, but he didn't see to like that. We both left with a smile and a joke and all was well. Gutted not to have been able to see more, but hey ho, we got some!
There's less and less onsite as each day passes now. Soon, 150 new homes will be there. I was glad to hear the mansion house and a few of the main hospital buildings will be saved from demolition though.
Believe it or not, the picture above and below was the same day.. doesn't look like it, I know! We spent a good hour in the ward, and by the time we came out, the skies had cleared!
Note the date on the paper below;
Thanks for looking!
