Leylands nursing home derby june 2008

Today I took a visit to my old work place The Leylands Estate

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.937131&lon=-1.491496&z=19.7&r=0&src=msa

…it’s a retirement estate for people that have worked in the retail or drapery industry ran by Retail Trust..its a big area consisting of 83 bungalows and about 20 flats…it also had a nursing home im not sure how long the nursing home had been there it looks quite a 70s structure…the estate from what I gather opened around 53/54 opened by the queen …my dad remembers being a toddler sat on broadway waving his little flag..

I worked here as a painter on the maintenance team and this nursing home has been closed for about four years now

Theres also some more disused building on the estate but I wasent allowed to go in cos they had the asbestos people in there…so I only got to go in the nursing home

Now that's a good find disco, good work!

Whats going to happen to that place?

they are selling half the estate...like 35 of the 82 bungalows and where the nursing home is now there gonna build apartments that are fully disable access..so there obviously gonna make some money out of it and have properties over less space...so everybody wins...well they do any way..there was a huge farmers field behind it that was always having planning permission but it had no access...the bungalows being sold are adjacent to this field...hey presto access..so another piece of green land is gonna become full of houses

Doesn't surprise me one bit, still they could always accidentally knock down a few unused listed buildings!

That demolition guy picture looks well freaky! "Hey who turned out the lights" comes to mind.

Always good to see new Derby locations, especially ones not on my list!

yeah it was...shame to close it down..but the money they get funded per bed isnt nearly enough to keep a place like that running like so many of the other nursing homes closing down the goverment doesnt seem to wanna help them...ah well...im gonna try and see if they will let me in the other buildings when the asbestos men have gone....oh and heres a pic i took on site about 3 years ago....this tree is amazing

Good find - I walk past this almost everyday; didn't realise it was abandoned.

Did you get permission to go in there?

yeah i did...theres only that one building thats empty....all the little bungalows are occupied its still very much a live site...

Cheers; I thought it still looked busy. They probably won't appreciate people creeping around at night ;)

Btw Really like the sunlight shot from 3 years ago :)
