After another brief hiatus from Urbex, I have returned, got myself an exploring buddy and broken my deep shelter cherry finally! The timing seemed just right what with the dry weather we've been having all summer...

History on the site can be found here: http://www.subterraneanhistory.co.uk/2006/05/fan-bay-deep-shelter.html

Apologies in advance for the pictures, I know they're not perfect, they were taken with my friend's phone. Hopefully on my next explore I'll have a point & shoot with me.

I donned some old clothes, smacked a couple of Maglites in my side pack and drove the 45 mins to St.Margarets Bay to have a little scout through some other sites on the way and get a decent walk in...

Descending deeper, down further flights of stairs and beneath an archway, you begin to get an idea of the scale of the site. What appears to be an asbestos lagged ventilation duct can be seen below, going down with the stairs.

The air is cool and very humid. I was shocked to see that actually some of the floor was pretty clean and clear down there. I didn't see any graffiti, but there's plenty of 28DL member's names scrawled about the place. The scale of the place is by no means well depicted by my crappy photographs, but I believe this section was approximately 40m in length alone. Metal and bakerlite light fixtures can be found along the ceiling.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand the inside would have originally been lined with ply?

There's a partially dismantled section with iron work scattered about the place.

Section with a brick partition wall.

Also an unlined section, which has suffered a collapse.

Looking back up the stairs, on the way out.

Hopefully won't get sent to the pit! Thanks for looking.

Interesting place. So you reckon it was ply'd out in it's day then? Seems a lot of effort to go to for a temporary structure but then I wouldn't be surprised either. Very deep is it? Looks it.

Must have been quite oppressive down there back in the day, cracking explore mind!

I always imagine it would have been bustling in the war! Very cool and peaceful these days though :)

Hopefully more new explores to come from this area in the very near future, with improved pictures too!
