It's been a while since anyone posted a update on Charmey Down airfield, so here I am. I did not cover the entire grounds of Charmey Down due to a lack of time, however I did do to the most interesting part the Air Control Tower.

Here is the Control Tower in the 1980'd relatively intact.

And Today

Now for a bit of history plucked from Wikipedia:

Royal Air Force Charmy Down or RAF Charmy Down is a former Royal Air Force station. Opened in 1941 it was used by initially by the Royal Air Force and then later by the United States Army Air Forces. During the war it was used primarily as night fighter interceptor airfield. After the end of hostilities in Europe, the airfield returned to the RAF. There was little flying from the station although it was not officially closed until October 1946.

At first I stumbled upon this small pillbox, the determined explorer will find a way in, nothing special inside but the lack of graffiti is wonderful

The view

A stroll around the airfield perimeter saw some unusual buildings. Unusual in the fact that the had two entrances to a rectangular room. I am guessing they were used as a store room.

There were a few other small similar buildings similar to the store rooms but the cows seemed to territorial to let me enter.:concern:

On the way to the Control Tower there was this, nothing interesting but it'd make a good photo. (something Wes Anderson about it)

Finally the Control Tower. Quite an imposing building. Not sure how or why but the ground floor is higher than the ground by about a meter or so. There was no hatch to get below to a basement level inside either.

Inside the first floor was some small rooms and one large room with lots of windows.

The windowed room:

The other rooms:

There were a few remnants of electronic in the Tower which I find interesting:

Unfortunately the first floor was bared off and the lock seems not to have been unlocked in many years.

However I did try to get a picture of the first floor.

Saw this on the way out

Here's the map of the area:

This is my first post, hopefully it was alright.

Little known fact, I actually grew up here, the airfield was my childhood playground. Nice to see an update, thanks and welcome.

Not too bad for your first post. It would be nice if you could put a gap between each photo, it looks like on big picture.

That visit from 2008 is extensive. It might be worth another trip to look at the other buildings. And I'll note for next time the gap in between photos.
