Me and the Wife always try to visit Poland every year so this years visit was to Gdansk, best known for being remembered for the shipyard strikes of the early 1980`s.The main purpose of this trip was to visit Stutthof concentration camp some 34km east of Gdansk. Some explorers may frown on this sort of subject but it is sadly part of man`s history and it happened. This is either my 7th or 8th camp I have done but we were amazed how many people were walking round it..young couples with small children being the most surprising..anyhow,a little history for you:
Stutthof was a Nazi German concentration camp built in a secluded, wet, and wooded area near the small town of Sztutowo 34 km east of the city of Gdańsk in the former territory of the Free City of Danzig.Only 20% of the old camp now exists but there is more than enough to show what man actually did to fellow man..tragic period of man`s existence.
The camp was set up around already existing structures after the invasion of Poland in World War II, used for the imprisonment of Polish intelligentsia. The actual barracks were built in the following year by hundreds of prisoners enslaved in specialized commandos. Stutthof was the first camp outside German borders, in operation from 2nd September 1939, and the last camp liberated by the Allies on 9 May 1945. More than 85,000 victims died in the camp out of as many as 110,000 inmates deported there.
Some pics now
Commandants Villa
Dog House where the smallest dogs weighed more than a prisoner
Command Building in Nazi times
Command building 2017
Death Gate
Gas chamber
Crematorium
DAW Factory sadly off limits
Infirmary
And finally, one of several watch towers
So that was a small selection from Stutthof camp
For a more concise walk through, see below and apologies if you find this depressing because it is but it indeed happened...
