I mentioned this in another thread (but I now can't find it) and then got the title wrong.
If you can, get a hold of Beaches, Fields, Streets and Hills; the anti-invasion landscapes of England, 1940 by William Foot.
At 694 pages, you'll break your foot if you drop it, but it's currently the closest thing to a modern 'bible' on the subject.
