Got caught a few weeks ago outside this place just prior to going in, one of those free policemen sorry psco's? or summet...He was gutted he thought he'd caught the local teens who had started trashing the place...Chatting with said law official both houses (on huge plots both detached and quite pretty)are now in the hands of the developers. Can't find any history/have done externals as one has been re secured again and the other has been badly damaged by forced entry, not by me!!Strange castle like extension on rear and some nice out buildings. Thought it time to leave when a car parked up outside but slipped out unnoticed. Was expecting more 'stuff' inside...but empty and my pics were a bit disappointing also...

The 'strange castle like extension' was a very common method of adding plumbed in bathrooms and toilets to larger Victorian family homes that had been built before internal plumbing became the norm. Usually the roof line blended with the original house roof construction and slating, so the reason for the flat roof and castellated parapet is strange - was this an observation area for a nice view behind the house? An easy access to the roof space would indicate this possibility. In similar extensions I have seen over the years, there was always a WC and washroom on the ground floor for the 'garden servants' to use.

Photograph 3 illustrates an item of some value - if it could be attributed to a known artist/maker. It is obviously an adjustable tripod 'coffee' table (if original top is missing) or adjustable stool (if what we see is the circular seat). Blacksmith or artisan made using industrial scrap iron, items like this appear to have been quite common in the early 1900's/20's. Nice to see the old telephone ringer/generator still in place and good old 'john Begg' is a real blast from the past.

Thanks for the info, interesting stuff indeed, I have been educated! You will have to fill me in on 'john begg' though!!??

cheers, there is also a very pretty similar house next door/ empty but sealed, I have visions of goodies inside, nice couple of houses on huge plots right in the middle of a busy town centre...

Nice little splore that bud - loved how the forum members knew the history of a old malt long departed - that in itself tells a thousand storys lol
