Brown Clee, at 540m. is the highest point in Shropshire. It was much mined and quarried. The quarrying was for Dhustone - a very hard form of granite. There are also numerous bell pits and even a tar pit (which I couldn't find).
The Dhustone was crushed and then loaded onto wagons which descended from the hill via a tramway.
It's as remote as you can get in Shropshire. It's frequently shrouded in fog and as a result has been the scene of numerous plane crashes. Mainly around WW2. There's a plaque up there but this eluded me.
I last visited 10 years ago. Nothing much had changed!
