Eastry workhouse was part of the Gilbert Union, which in 1782, provided the asylum for children, the elderly. A main house is situated in the North-West corner, surrounded by other various buildings & a courtyard!
A new workhouse was built in 1835-6, to the west side of the original building. William Spanton designed the building so that it could accommodate 500+ inmates. It became a hospital after some time of it being a workhouse, seeking to care for people with learning difficulties.
At the front of the hospital, is a chapel, situated at the road side. Eastry Hospital closed in the late 90's
The new building layout.....
On my recent visit, I only went into the smaller building & the chapel, as the other one was severely burnt a few years back (for my own safety).I only found toilets, cupboards & a few bits & pieces. It had an eerie atmosphere....but you'll see for yourself, this is my first ever report, so bare with me......
