J. N. Miller Ltd initially began flour milling around 1842, and was made a private limited company in 1907. The company had its own canal basin as the canals were important for the transportation of raw materials. They traded in flour, seed grain, fertilisers, straight provender and flaking plants. The original wooden mill was destroyed by fire in 1851and was replaced with a brick structure. The company later went into the production of animal feed which became their main business. However, by 1959, flour milling was discontinued. The mill finally closed in 1981.
