I've found a thread regarding this site through google a while ago now but I thought I would add my own contribution. I visited this site back in 2010 with a friend of mine. I'd just bought my first DSLR before I moved overseas to NZ and was looking to use it.
I only found the album again last week as I've been trolling through my library trying to sort it out. Most of the photos are pretty woeful, I had no idea how the camera really worked, and my composition was just as bad I'd love to return to the site knowing what I know now. I managed to salvage some of the photos anyway, and thought you guys might like to see.
Anyway, some background on the site. St. Crispins was opened in 1876, although it was initially known as Berrywood Asylum. The hospital was used by the military throughout WW1 & WW2. The hospital was closed in 1995 and has stood in ruin since with a fire ravaging the main hall. Not much of the site is left, being quite central, and easy to bypass the fencing, I can imagine quite a few people have got in.
A building development has taken place, with new buildings being built very close to the main buildings. Thankfully, the clock tower and main building is being restored with the clock tower having a spiral staircase running through it.
I heard recently there was a major fire there earlier this month, I can't really tell you much about that though.
I climbed up the clock tower as far as I could, the photo over looking the burnt roof is the window above the clock. I'm not a big lad but I couldn't fit into the tunnel
