Steetley Magnesite, Hartlepool, March 08

This is a combination of a couple of reports that I had up on 28DL but I wanted to stick them up here too for those who haven't seen them yet. This place doesn't seem to have been documented much on here but its my most local site and also my favourite so I just had to contribute this lot.

For those who don't know of Steetley Magnesite it was a massive site which produced magnesium from seawater right on the coast at Hartlepool. It closed in 2005 and since then its been left in this derelict state, like someone just drove through with a wrecking ball. Housing is planned for the site but none of that can happen just yet because there is a dispute with the land being a natural habitat for costal birds.

Anyway, I won't waffle on any more but if anyone wants more info just ask.

Wow, what an amazing site. I can well see why this is a favourite explore...it's brilliant! Cracking photos, Poolie...really enjoyed viewing them.

Thanks for your comments people, much appreciated. Its the type of site that I try to encourage as many people as possible to visit but when you do just make sure that you have many hours spare as you will find yourselves wandering around for ages.

Its one heck of a place and I personally will be upset when its gone. I've grown up with that massive big chimney towering over my part of town and it'll be a sad day when it goes. The longer this nature reserve thing drags on the better in my opinion.
