This is the third (and final) location of my road trip. It wasn't actually meant to be, but as usual despite planning ahead and taking more maps with me than W H Smiths, I got lost after leaving Forgotten but not gone house.
Winston Barracks was built in the 1930s for the Depot of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). The buildings were designed in a Neo Georgian style, the most prominent being the H shaped barrack block (now converted into flats). During WW2 26 Primary Training Centre was established here.
From 1961 the barracks were shared with the Royal Highland Fusiliers. Both regiments moved out in 1964 to barracks at Edinburgh.
After 1967 the barracks were mothballed although the residential quarters remained used by the US armed forces. Also it was earmarked as an emergency 1,000 bed hospital for the US navy during the Cold War.
It was handed back to the UK by the US in 1991 and sold for deveopment in 1994.
Most of the buildings are now cleared away although it was a large site (55 acres).
