One from the holiday album. Driving along the coast road into Concarneau (cf other reports from last year) by the Plage De Sables, I spotted this house with what looks like a fairly substantial German pillbox ( something like a Type 630?) built into its foundations. A quick hop out of the car also revealed a rocky outcrop about 300 yards from the house into the sea, which I thought looked too random to NOT be connected to the house in some way, so as it was low tide I decided on a quick explore. Sure enough out there in the estuary was a tobruk sunk into the rocks, suggesting that the whole house was a fortress (perhaps used by officers?). A very unusual arrangement but obviously part of the infamous Atlantic Wall in some way.
A view of the house and tobruk (in the rocks to the right of the pic) from the road
The embrasure at the foot of the house
Other smaller embrasures for drainage and other stuff that have obviously since been filled in
And now the tobruk
Inside the tobruk
A really interesting find and there are lots like this in Finistere. Enjoy!
